In 1904, Yujiro was 19 yrs when he disembarked the "Empress of India" ship at Vancouver. It was a long journey from his ancestral hometown of Tahara, Wakayama, Japan to Kobe to Canada. By May, 1904, Yujiro had traveled down to Seattle, Washington. "I got a job as a track man in North Washington and worked 10 hrs. every day." Pay was menial--$1.10 a day." In search of a better job, Yujiro boarded a ship in Seattle arriving in San Francisco in September, 1904.
His next stop was in Fresno, known for its raisin and grape vineyards. Yujiro again worked 11 hr days. When the season ended, he visited relatives in Los Angeles. In 1905, "I came back to San Francisco again and worked as a school boy. In 1906, a big earthquake hit, I appealed for government help." Yujiro was sent to Oakland, CA — his last stop before settling in Southern California.
